SOME
INTERESTING ASPECTS
Consists of readily available nontoxic, non-corrosive, mildly
hygroscopic, non-flame supporting ingredients.
Color ranges from yellow to black.
Density: 1.6-1.7 g/cc.
Density at 40Kpsi: 1.775 g/cc.
Bulk density (20-50 mesh): .88-90 g/cc.
Melt point: 192C (377.6F).
Ignition at: 330C (626F).
Safety window: 138C (248.4F).
Burn escalation: Two stage exothermic from 330C (626F) to
455C (851F).
Point of burn: +/- 4,000F.
Heat of combustion: 718 cal/gm.
Gas volume of combustion: 300 cc/gm.
Combustion products: CO2, CO, N2, H20, K2C03.
Residue on combustion is a 28% of original mass
non-accumulating fly ash rust inhibiting lubricant..
1990-1995: A test rifle (Navy Arms .58 "Zouave" replica) was
fired 2,600 times with KURTZ SYSTEM GOLDEN POWDER using RWS musket caps with no bore
cleaning whatsoever. The nipple, lock, and external areas only required cleaning.
Base material may be manufactured with a wide range of methods, including ambient or
heated twin screw extrusion. End use configurations may also be created by a wide range of
methods: Ambient or hot molded under vacuum, melted, hot poured, injection molded, ambient
or heated compaction molded, ambient or heated punch pressed, with true faithfulness to
mold or die motif. Water on the molecule provides binding. No other binder required.
Material and mold remain ambient before, during, and after compaction @ +\- 40,000 psi.
May be granulated or die cut to traditional grinds. Material is particularly adaptable to
on site manufacture for mining. Material may be used to create no wad blank cartridges for
motion picture close ups. May be ball milled, hammer milled, or jet milled in completed
form with proper explosion proof, humidity, and temperature controlled equipment.
Finished product may be treated for
water resistance. Material may be rolled into a slightly damp thin rope and used as fuse.
Should material become water logged or liquefied with water, material will reconstitute on
its own to original performance levels when dried out. Unprotected material is sensitive
to short and long wave ultraviolet, exhibiting color changes to an eventual dark purple,
with no apparent effect on performance. May be regarded a bridging gunpowder, applicable
for use in antique, replica, and many modern firearms. Chamber pressures ranging from
5KLUP through 12KLUP may be anticipated.
In 1984, Ken Grissom (then
Sports Editor for the Houston Post) bought 3 new barrels and fired 10 rounds in each: 1)
black powder, 2) Pyrodex (tm), and 3) KURTZ SYSTEM GOLDEN POWDER. A year later, he cleaned
each barrel and sawed them lengthwise to find #1 and #2 were badly pitted and corroded,
and #3 glistened like a brand new barrel. (Test documented in the Houston Post).
